Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is a Southwestern original, from her early ranch life to bucking partisan expectations in the highest court of the land. The exhibit focuses on young Sandra Day, who spent much of her youth at her Irish-American family’s Lazy B Ranch near Duncan, a small town just west of Arizona’s eastern border. The resilience and perseverance in the future justice’s demeanor is evident from early challenges like learning to drive at the age of 7 all the way to becoming the nation’s first woman on the Supreme Court.
